What should you do if your baggage is delayed or lost?

The first step is to inform the airline about the delayed/lost baggage right away.

If you notice that your baggage is delayed, please inform the airline representative at the baggage claim. To report a lost bag, you will need to present your passport, boarding pass, and baggage tag (a sticker usually attached to your boarding pass at the check-in counter). Providing a photo of your suitcase or any additional information can help speed up the search process.

The airline representative will document your contact information and issue you a Property Irregularity Report or PIR with a unique reference number for tracking purposes. This document is important, don’t lose it.

Usually, if your baggage is delayed, it’s found within the first 24 hours. Once your bag is located, the airline will get in touch with you to schedule a delivery.

Tracking Your Lost Baggage

You will receive a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the airport with a unique reference number. You’ll need to keep this safe as it’s required to track your baggage.

To monitor the status of your misplaced bag, use the airline’s online baggage tracing system. The airline personnel will provide you with the details when you report your lost bag. Crucial details like your name and PIR are necessary to use this baggage tracker.

Keep in mind, that the number on your baggage tag is different from your PIR number.

Baggage Delayed For 5+ Days

If your checked bag is not found within five days of reporting it as delayed, you must contact the airline and provide a detailed description of your luggage and its contents. You can submit these details by completing the contents list on the airline’s baggage status page. This option will be available five days after reporting the delay.

Reimbursement of Expenses

Remember, compensation for delayed baggage entails the reimbursement of expenses incurred due to the delay in baggage arrival.

Please keep in mind that you are entitled to a refund for basic necessities such as undergarments, toiletries, and necessary clothing if your baggage is lost or delayed. It is essential to keep the receipts for these purchases as they will be used when filing a claim. Only essential items are eligible for reimbursement.

The claim should be submitted within 21 days from the day the delayed baggage is delivered.

Expenses reimbursement is often called “delayed baggage compensation”.

Lost Baggage (You Can Get Compensation)

Air Serbia has a window of 21 days to track and return your baggage.

If your delayed baggage has not been located within these 21 days, it is officially regarded as lost. In this situation, you are permitted to submit a claim for compensation with the airline. You may be eligible for compensation of up to €1300.

Please be aware that it is not recommended to include electronics, artwork, jewellery, etc., in your checked baggage, as Air Serbia (or any other airline) does not hold accountability to compensate for the full value of such items, only to the degree defined by the Montreal Convention and Air Serbia’s Conditions of Carriage.

When lodging a claim, make sure to have your boarding pass, baggage tags, and the Property Irregularity Report (PIR) along with your reference number. If you have incurred any additional costs while waiting for your baggage, you can claim these by providing receipts for your purchases.

Before making any purchase, it is important to contact your insurer and keep a record of all receipts. Even if your policy provides coverage, including compensation for baggage delay, you will not be refunded without receipts.

To avoid the challenges of potential baggage loss or delay, it’s recommended to pack a set of clothes and undergarments in your carry-on. This is especially important if you’re travelling to a tropical destination where suitable attire for the warm climate and bathing suits are necessary.

Another precautionary step is to keep your medications and valuable items in your carry-on to protect yourself in case your checked luggage goes missing.
